What the keyword tool does not do for you:

The Google Keyword Tool does not work the way most article writers and website publishers believe, but it still has value as mentioned above. This tool does not tell you how many searches were performed during the month on the Google Search Engine. I can’t tell you how many thousands of leading seo websites make the mistake of thinking that the tools results are all searches performed on the Google Search Engine!

To better understand the results of Google Keyword Tool the first thing you should know is this Google Tool is not named “Google Keyword Tool,” the proper name is “Google Adwords Keyword Tool.” This tool was developed for Google Adwords users, not for people attempting to drive free traffic to their site from Search Engines.

Now that we know where the Traffic Volume in this tool comes from, Google Search and their Ad Networks, we will now break these numbers down even further by studying the “Match Type.”

The default match type setting is Broad, but there are three other settings that many people overlook, they are Phrase, Exact and Negative. The following image shows the definitions of each.

I will describe in further detail the difference between the two options “Broad Match” and “Exact Match.”

Broad Match not only shows the volume of searches for the exact keyword or keyword phrase you have searched, it also includes similar keywords and keyword phrases.

Exact Match only shows the volume of searches for the exact keyword you have searched for. To better understand how this works go to Google Search and perform the following two searches:

Work at home and “work at home” Work at home without the brackets results in 366 million results. When you look closely at the results you find that Google has included any site that has the term “work” or “at” or “home.” So as far as learning the volume for specific keywords or phrases are concerned, this is useless.

Now do your Google search for work at home with the brackets “work at home” The result is now 16.2 million. The majority of the results will include the exact keyword phrase “work at home” or close variations such as “working at home”

This is the same principle between the “broad” and “exact” keyword search using the google keyword tool. In the following image you see that the broad search resulted in 1,830,000 monthly searches, but when the exact search was used the number dropped to 450,000. That is a 75% decrease in search volume. Again, remember this volume is not a true picture of the searches performed on the Google Search Engine.
